A Statement of Conscience

Nebraska Faith Leaders Against Gambling Expansion

We, the undersigned clergy and faith leaders of Nebraska, stand united in our opposition to the expansion of predatory gambling in our state. We call upon our congregations, our communities, and our elected officials to protect Nebraska families.

The Statement

✦

We, the undersigned faith leaders of Nebraska, issue this statement of conscience:

Gambling is not a victimless activity. It is a predatory industry designed to extract wealth from the most vulnerable members of our communities — the poor, the addicted, the desperate. The gambling industry's own research confirms that problem gamblers generate the majority of casino revenue. This is not economic development. It is exploitation.

We have witnessed firsthand the devastation that gambling disorder brings to families in our congregations. Marriages destroyed. Children neglected. Savings wiped out. Suicides. The social costs of gambling expansion fall disproportionately on those least able to bear them.

Nebraska's constitution has long protected our citizens from the predatory gambling industry. We urge Nebraskans to vote NO on any initiative that would expand gambling in our state, and we call upon our state legislature to resist the well-funded lobbying of the casino industry.

Our faith traditions teach us to protect the vulnerable, to pursue justice, and to build communities of wholeness. The expansion of gambling is incompatible with these values. We stand together in opposition.
